Self-exclusion: closing the door on purpose
Sometimes a deposit limit is no longer enough. If you notice that you chase losses, spend more time or money than planned, or that gambling sets your mood, a block is a strong tool. Self-exclusion works at two levels: with a single operator, and in some countries through a national scheme that covers every licensed operator at once.
Self-exclusion with an operator
Most licensed operators let you close your account for a set period or permanently, usually from the responsible gambling section of your account settings or via support. During the exclusion you cannot log in to play, and marketing should stop. Check how long the block lasts and whether it can be lifted early; a longer, irreversible period is usually the safer choice.
National schemes
Where a national register exists, one application blocks you at all licensed operators. That closes the most common escape route: simply switching to another site. In Germany the scheme is OASIS, the nationwide player blocking system run by the Regierungspräsidium Darmstadt. Permitted operators must be connected to it, and you can apply digitally: OASIS player blocking at the Regierungspräsidium Darmstadt. Elsewhere, ask your national regulator whether a similar register exists.
Blocks and game choice
Behaviour tends to tip fastest with short-round formats and extreme slots. At Aviator or Chicken Train, round follows round within seconds; at Mental 2, a long dry spell invites "just a bit longer" until the big hit. If you recognise these patterns in yourself, do not wait for the next win; act now.
Other tools before a full block
- Deposit limits: set them low and do not raise them on impulse.
- Time-outs: many accounts offer short breaks from a day to several weeks.
- Payment controls: some banks let you block gambling transactions on your cards.
- Blocking software: device-level filters make gambling sites harder to reach.
Talking to someone
A block controls access, not the pressure behind it. Gambling Therapy offers free online support in many languages, and Gamblers Anonymous lists meetings. In Germany, the BIÖG helpline on 0800 1 37 27 00 is free and anonymous.
What we do
