Bet types: singles, accumulators, handicaps and systems
The first bet slip comes with vocabulary that is rarely explained. This page walks through the main bet types with simple worked examples in neutral units. Whether all of them are available in your Nines account depends on the operator's sportsbook, which we cannot confirm.
Single
One selection, one price. Example: 10 units on a home win at 2.10 returns 21 if it wins, a profit of 11. Singles are the easiest bets to control because each one stands alone.
Accumulator
Several selections on one slip, with odds multiplied together. Example with three legs at 1.80, 1.90 and 2.00: combined odds 6.84, so 10 units would return 68.40. Tempting, but all three must win. Each extra leg lowers the chance of success and multiplies the bookmaker's margin.
Handicap
One side starts with a virtual lead or deficit. With a minus-1 handicap the favourite must win by at least two goals. Asian handicaps add half and quarter lines, where part of the stake can be refunded. The precise rules are set by the bookmaker.
Over/under
A bet on a total, such as goals, points or games. "Over 2.5 goals" wins with three goals or more. The winner of the match is irrelevant.
System bets
A system bundles several accumulators. A 2-from-3 system creates every possible double from three selections, so three doubles. If two selections win, at least one double pays. The stake is spread across all combinations: 3 units per double means 9 units in total.
Worked example: singles versus an accumulator
Suppose you put 30 units on three matches. As three singles of 10 at odds near 2.00, one correct pick returns 20. As one 30-unit accumulator, you only win if all three are right, but then far more. The accumulator is the more volatile tool, much like an extreme slot such as Mental 2 compared with a steadier one like Wild Bandito.
Which bet type suits whom
If you want predictable betting, stick to singles with a fixed stake. Accumulators and systems belong, if anywhere, in a small corner of the budget. Whatever you choose, check that the operator is licensed in your country first.
